Moody’s
Australian Financial Institutions team has a significant and growing
presence in Australia. We rate virtually all of the
major banks and some of the largest insurance companies and mortgage
insurers in the country, thereby giving us a broad and comprehensive
perspective on the Australian financial system. Our rating approach, like
that adopted globally, is unstructured, as we consider both qualitative and
quantitative factors to maximize flexibility and ensure high quality
opinions.
Moody’s analysts for
Australian financial institutions – like their colleagues in the corporate
finance group – are based throughout the region, thus enhancing the
perspective they provide.
We provide credit
ratings covering long-term and short-term deposits using Moody’s scale from
Aaa to C. We also offer financial strength
ratings, which take into account a bank’s inherent financial strength
excluding external supports from governments or parent entities, based on a
scale from A (exceptional) to E (very weak). We also rate banks’ long-term
debt (senior and subordinated), counterparty risk and commercial paper.
Over the past decade,
Moody’s bank service has evolved from focusing almost solely on bond market
participants to also including credit professionals with exposure to other,
primarily bank-to-bank, lending.
We publish in-depth
reports on all Australian banks that we cover, and each of the banking
systems we follow. Our banking research services also feature analyst
access, rating updates, special comments, teleconferences and briefings.
Our ratings and opinions on financial institutions carry significant weight
among investors, the companies themselves, regulators and various other
market participants worldwide.
