Loss Given Default (LGD)

Loss Given Default (LGD) assessments and probability of default (PD) ratings provide additional transparency into the composition of Moody's traditional long-term ratings and help market participants understand how the composition of companies' capital structures could impact various instruments' ultimate recovery rates in the event of default.  Moody's has assigned LGD assessments and PD ratings to more than 1,200 speculative grade companies in the US, Canada, and EMEA.

    • Fourth quarter increase in follow-on defaults suggests distressed exchanges were no panacea
      Defaults by rated US non-financial companies spiked in the last quarter of 2011 as borrowers with unsustainable capital structures fell prey to a still-weak economy and tight credit market conditions, says our inaugural US Corporate Default Monitor. The increase to 17 defaults from 12 in the year-earlier quarter is primarily due to five follow-on defaults, suggesting that prior restructurings could not prevent the eventual default.
