Korea Investors Service, Korea's first credit rating agency, introduced credit ratings services to local commercial paper markets in 1985 and bond markets in 1986. Moody's and Korea Information Service Inc. (which was subsequently acquired by NICE Group in Korea and changed its name to NICE Information Service Co., Ltd.) formally established Korea Investors Service, Inc. (KIS) as a joint venture rating firm in Korea which began operations on August 21, 1998. The purpose of the joint venture is to expand credit ratings and analysis in the Korean domestic capital markets. KIS's local currency ratings are assigned to corporates, financial institutions, public companies, as well as asset-backed securities. As of 2015, KIS had ratings on approximately 530 domestic issuers.
