Moody's Investors Service
ASIA PACIFIC WEEKLY
22-29 March

This week, we look the outlooks for the Chinese economy in the context of its property market, steelmakers in China, unregulated power utilities in Asia Pacific, and the property and casualty (P&C) insurance industry in Japan. And, with structured finance, we assess the prospects for the covered bond market in the region, while the latest edition of our “Structured Thinking: Asia Pacific” newsletter looks at developments across different asset classes.

We believe that China’s economy would face heightened risks from a potential future property downturn compared to when Moody's previously analyzed the macroeconomic importance of the real estate sector in 2014.

We expect the earnings of Chinese steel companies will likely weaken in 2017 -- after substantial improvement in 2016 -- primarily because of a slight weakening of domestic demand.

The strategies of unregulated power companies to strengthen their financial profiles and mitigate market volatility and carbon transition risk will  be increasingly important for their credit quality.

The outlook for the Japanese property and casualty (P&C) insurance industry over the next
12-18 months is stable, reflecting the industry's stabilizing underwriting profitability.

More regulatory support can help further the region's covered bond markets and would include increasing the percentage of assets that the banks can use to issue covered bonds.
