Moody's Investors Service
ASIA PACIFIC WEEKLY
May 17 - 24, 2017

We today downgraded China’s sovereign rating to A1 from Aa3 and changed the outlook to stable from negative. The downgrade reflects our expectation that China’s financial strength will erode somewhat over the coming years, with economy-wide debt continuing to rise as potential growth slows. Our webcasts this Friday in English and Putonghua will cover today’s rating action in more detail.

Meanwhile, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has announced tighter requirements for bank lending to property developers, which we view as credit negative for the developers, but credit positive for banks.

We also published a report on Japan’s property and casualty (P&C) insurers, which reported an increase in underwriting profits for the fiscal year ended March 2017. At the same time, the fiscal 2017 results for Japan’s three megabanks highlight the challenges they face in maintaining their bottom lines under the negative interest rate policy.

On the events front, we will hold a webcast tomorrow on Australian credit, with an update on the sovereign, banks and housing market. Next week, we’ll host a briefing on Japanese oil & gas companies and launch our annual China Credit Risk Conference in Hong Kong, followed by Singapore in the subsequent week.
