Moody's Investors Service
ASIA PACIFIC WEEKLY
Jan 10 - 17, 2018

This week we published our outlook for Japan’s asset-backed securities (ABS) and residential mortgage-backed securities (RMBS) sectors, with a low level of unemployment and moderate economic growth expected to keep default rates and delinquencies low during 2018. Our briefing on Tuesday in Tokyo will discuss our outlook for the sector in more detail.

Meanwhile, our Asian Liquidity Stress Indicator (LSI) improved to 26.2% in December from 30.3% at year-end 2016, indicating – although above the long-term average of 23.1% - continued weakness in liquidity for many companies in the region.

And in Australia we comment on the government’s decision to freeze university funding under the Commonwealth Grants Scheme in 2018 and 2019, which will force the higher education sector to review development and expansion plans – a credit negative.

On the events front, our Asia Credit Outlook Conference takes place in Singapore next week and in Hong Kong on 31 January. Registration is also open for the pre-conference workshops in both Singapore and Hong Kong on the topic of Chinese local government financial vehicles (LGFVs).
