Asia Pacific Weekly
July 11 - 18, 2018

This week we look at the continued slowdown in Asian high-yield issuance, against the backdrop of tightening credit conditions, rising interest rates, and a strengthening US dollar.

We also published a report on the global auto sector, noting that changes in how vehicles are made, used, insured and financed will affect credit conditions in multiple ways, and for a variety of sectors and financial instruments.

In particular, the report looks at four technology trends that are reshaping the auto sector, namely connectivity that reshapes vehicles as mobile devices, the increased use of alternative fuel vehicles, the introduction of autonomous automobiles, and ride sharing.

And in India, we discuss rising interest rates for loans against property to small- and medium-enterprises, and the impact on asset-backed securities (ABS) backed by such assets.

On the events front, we will host our a briefing on New Zealand credit in Auckland on 7 August and in Wellington on 10 August. Further ahead, we will host our 2018 Insurance Summit in Hong Kong on 6 September.

Asia High-Yield Interest Chartbook
[17 Jul] Asian high-yield issuance -- driven mainly by refinancing -- continued to slow in Q2 2018 from the prior quarter against the backdrop of tightening credit conditions, rising interest rates, and strengthening of the US dollar.

Cross-Sector - Global: Auto sector transformation will drive global multi-sector credit trends
[16 Jul] Changes in how vehicles are made, used, insured and financed will affect credit conditions in multiple ways, and for a variety of sectors and financial instruments.

SME ABS - India: Rising interest rates and cautious underwriting will limit refinancing options for SMEs
[16 Jul] The expected rise in interest rates for LAP will reduce refinancing options for small business owners, adversely affecting existing borrowers. Higher interest rates will also lead to an increase in loan repayment amounts for borrowers who cannot extend loan terms.

Structured finance - Japan: Heavy rain and flooding will have limited negative repercussions
[13 Jul] The underlying loans are very geographically diversified. In addition, the vehicle and home loans taken out by people affected by the flooding will likely be repurchased on par by originators — as was the case after the March 2011 and April 2016 earthquakes in Japan — and excluded from the securitized pools.

Auto ABS - China : Auto lease ABS transactions face incremental risks compared to auto loan deals
[11 Jul] In particular, auto lease ABS are exposed to legal risks not present in auto loan ABS transactions, while commingling and set-off risks are greater in auto lease ABS versus auto loan ABS.

Wesfarmers Limited: Strong portfolio of businesses will support credit quality following Coles demerger
[11 Jul] Relative to Wesfarmers' remaining retail portfolio, Coles shows lower margins and is facing fiercer competitive pressure in its supermarket sector. We therefore believe that the demerger of Coles will not weaken the group's credit profile.

Moody’s Credit Outlook on 12 and 16 July

[16 Jul] Australian regulator’s recommendations for electricity pricing are credit negative for unregulated utilities; Proposed changes to Australia’s regulatory rules are credit negative for regulated energy networks; Japan’s regional and local government tax revenue increase is credit positive.

[12 Jul] Wuzhou International Holdings Limited: Wuzhou International’s event of default is credit negative; Trucks, Agricultural & Industrial Equipment: China’s retaliatory tariffs are credit negative for US agricultural equipment-backed ABS.
