"Although the year had fewer extreme global loss events, 2023 was characterized by a high number of locally significant events. Collectively, they resulted in estimated insured losses near the recent five-year average and above the recent 10-year average, according to preliminary market estimates. According to Munich Re and Swiss Re, estimated insured losses in 2023 totaled US$95 billion and US$108 billion, respectively; for the latter, this marks the fourth consecutive year losses surpassed US$100 billion. The losses of the last seven years, with an average of more than US$100 billion per year, continue to pose significant challenges to understanding, managing, and pricing future weather-related risks."
