Pioneering climate risk management in the APAC insurance sector with Moody's

In the dynamic landscape of the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, insurers are increasingly confronted with the complex challenges of measuring and managing climate risks. Moody's is at the forefront of addressing these challenges, demonstrating significant progress helping insurers navigate the evolving climate risk landscape.

Through strategic market adoption, collaborative initiatives, and tailored solutions, Moody's is responding to the market's needs and actively shaping the future of climate risk management in the insurance industry. Two trends that stand out are:

  1. Increasing and sophisticated demands from regulators for climate stress-testing, especially with respect to physical climate risk,
  2. The need to integrate risk management practices that span both sides of the balance sheet and allow a comprehensive and systematic overview of how climate risk might impact the business.

Strategic market adoption: A testament to climate risk success in Asia-Pacific

A recent landmark deal with an insurer in Singapore underscores Moody's growing influence in the APAC market. By providing Moody’s Flood, Earthquake, and Climate on Demand Pro output, the company is equipping insurers with the necessary tools for comprehensive risk management and climate stress testing across Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

This milestone validates our strategy for collaborative market development and also highlights our commitment to delivering market-driven solutions that address the APAC insurance sector’s particular needs.

Collaborative initiatives: Sharing knowledge and best practices

Moody's actively engages with stakeholders across the region. In August, we partnered with the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers for an event called Exploring climate pathways and assessing the financial impacts of climate change for insurers. Soon afterward there was an insurance day in Malaysia that was co-hosted by the Joint Committee on Climate Change and attended by approximately 100 Malaysian insurers as well as banking and insurance regulators.

These initiatives not only facilitate the exchange of global best practices and solutions to challenges but also underscore our commitment to the internalization of customer needs through market-driven solution development.

Tailored solutions: Addressing local regulatory requirements

Recognizing the APAC region’s diversity, Moody's has been proactive in tailoring our capabilities to meet local markets’ specific needs. In Malaysia, for example, we have integrated prescribed scenarios into our Climate Pathways solution to align with local regulatory requirements. Live trials are currently being run with several Malaysian insurers allowing them to experience firsthand how the Climate Pathways solution works and what it can deliver to support their needs. Additionally, we have designed mortality scenarios to address the impact of climate change on Malaysian life insurers through the introduction of a climate impact study project. These bespoke solutions highlight our agility in adapting to the various challenges climate risk poses in different jurisdictions.

In conclusion, Moody's is making significant strides helping insurers in the APAC region address the multifaceted challenges of measuring and managing climate risk. Through strategic market adoption, collaborative initiatives, and the development of tailored solutions, we respond to current needs and are paving the way for a more resilient insurance sector. As we continue to innovate and collaborate, Moody's remains committed to empowering insurers with the knowledge, tools, and solutions they need to thrive in an ever-changing climate risk landscape.
