Discover what’s coming up in Version 25

Derek Neal

Associate Director - Product Management, Software and Applications

Released on May 28, Version 25 of Moody’s RiskLink®, RiskBrowser®, and related products includes many new updates and improvements.

With Version 25 simultaneously released as a download for on-premises users and in the cloud-native Moody’s Intelligent Risk Platform™ (IRP) to add new capabilities to all relevant applications, this now means that the IRP and its hosted applications will simultaneously support seven model versions, from Version 18 to the latest Version 25.

Some highlights of the Version 25 release include:

1.      Update to Moody’s RMS North Atlantic Hurricane Models

2.      Moody’s RMS India Cyclone Model release

3.      Major enhancements to the geocoding engine for Moody’s RMS models

4.      Updated Industry Exposure Databases and Industry Loss Curves

Let’s dive into the update:

1.      Moody’s RMS North Atlantic Hurricane Models

For the new Version 25 of Moody’s RMS North Atlantic Hurricane Models, our priority is to reflect the latest up-to-date view of hurricane risk and ensure the model represents the most well-validated and comprehensive view of hurricane risk available on the market. The release includes updates to geocoding, event rates, and historical reconstructions, with minor enhancements to the hazard, vulnerability, and post-event loss amplification components.

The modeling improvements primarily reflect recent hurricane activity since the Version 23 update two years ago and include over US$6 billion in new detailed loss data and learnings from recent landfalling events.

Consistent with previous updates, the release enables Moody’s to continue compliance with Florida Commission on Hurricane Loss Projection Methodology (FCHLPM) standards, ensuring carriers can use the model for residential rate filing purposes within the state.

To ensure consistency between the U.S. Inland Flood High-Definition (HD) Model and the Version 25 North Atlantic Hurricane Models, an update to the flood model will be released in parallel with Version 25. Updates include additional simulation sets for the updated long-term and medium-term event rates in Version 25 North Atlantic Hurricane Models and storm surge footprints for new or updated historical reconstructions aligned with Version 25.

2.      New: Moody’s RMS India Cyclone Model

The release of Moody's RMS India Cyclone Model marks a significant advancement in cyclone risk assessment for the (re)insurance industry, to integrate the latest science and engineering and provide a comprehensive view of cyclone risk across India.

By accurately modeling wind risk from cyclones originating over the Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea, and the Indian Ocean, and incorporating detailed vulnerability assessments, this model complements our existing modeling solutions in the Indian market, including flood and earthquake models, offering a holistic approach to natural catastrophe risk management.

The model allows users to define secondary modifiers, such as roof characteristics, to improve the accuracy of modeled loss and also considers potential amplifying effects on insured losses for each coverage type following major catastrophe events (i.e., post-event loss amplification).

To provide accurate coding and risk differentiation for exposures in specialized lines of business, ancillary specialty models are also available with the India Cyclone Model as separately licensable extensions, including the Industrial Facilities Model, Builders Risk Model, and Marine Cargo Model.

3.      Geocoding updates

Within Version 25, there are significant geocoding enhancements to expand global coverage and increase precision. Key updates include:

Data improvements for Australia, India, Israel, Turkey, and over 40 countries in Europe:

  • New high-resolution layers
  • Expanded street coverage
  • Additional address points and points of interest (POIs)

Japan:

  • Support for 10-digit SONPO codes

Additionally, all updated countries feature improved high- and low-resolution CRESTA support, reflecting true postal and administrative geographies.

4.      Updated Industry Exposure Databases and Industry Loss Curves

The U.S., Canada, the Caribbean, and Mexico will benefit from updates to Industry Exposure Databases (IEDs) and Industry Loss Curves (ILCs) in conjunction with the release of Version 25—more details to come.

Looking beyond Version 25

The evolving risk landscape and customer feedback shape our model update roadmap. Alongside Version 25, several HD model updates are planned for 2025 and 2026, across North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.

There are no model updates currently scheduled for RiskLink, RiskBrower, and RiskBrowser online in 2026. However, if model updates are required in 2026 due to the evolving risk landscape and customer feedback, these models may first appear on the Intelligent Risk Platform and then be included in the upcoming RiskLink, RiskBrower, and RiskBrowser online releases after 2026.
