At the beginning of 2024, we published “The road to useful quantum computing,” recapping 2023’s advancements toward so-called “logical qubits,” which indicated that 2024 would be a good time to start paying attention to this technology if you weren’t already. Now that it’s 2025, we’ve reviewed 2024’s news with a specific focus on the financial sector, and three trends have emerged:
- Early in the year, many stories reiterated that finance is one of quantum computing research’s major focuses, which was already common knowledge before 2024.
- Mid-year, after the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) finalized a few post-quantum cryptography (PQC) standards, there was an increase in articles recommending migration to these new standards.
- Later in the year, the number of articles declined, but there was an increase in research aimed at eventually demonstrating commercial advantage.
Regarding the second trend, we published "Are you ready?" on November 28, 2024.
